The bright red pot was the culmination of our efforts, sitting innocuously on the stove as the water began to simmer. Only my friend Courtney was able to come, so when our third group member Tobechi arrived, the five of us decided to eat together.Ĭooking the meal itself became part of the experience, as we all crowded into that warm, cavernous room. Michael and I went to the kitchen at the back of the house, which was well-lit and spacious. Not exactly an ideal setting for first impressions, but I was optimistic. That would explain why the three front rooms had been entirely cleared of furniture, apart from a table and some chairs. “We’re setting up for a party on Friday.” one of them said to me in passing. There were nine or ten guys running around spasmodically, and I wasn’t entirely certain what was going on. When I walked into the foyer I was a little surprised. Michael had previously volunteered his house as the place that would host this meal, so I had my friend drive me over there and we began. I ran to the grocery store and bought angel hair pasta, prego pasta sauce (with garlic and onion), extra virgin olive oil, basil and Parmesan Romano powdered cheese. Eating among strangers has the potential discomfort of eating alone, but the unfamiliar people could go through metamorphosis together, ensuring a budding friendship, even delighting in this mutual experience. It’s almost meeting in the middle between eating with people you know and eating alone. I would like to reflect on how this could be applied to our project eating with strangers. The meal becomes rushed, satisfying the customers’ hunger and not doing anything to facilitate a lively discussion among friends, for example. Eating alone in public has almost become a pitiful activity, sadness for the neglected customer dining in the corner, hunched over their food protectively. But when eating alone, I think people feel uncomfortable. The food prompts conversation, and most of the time aids in creating a sense of ease. When eating among others, meals become leisurely. ![]() I find it unfortunate that people’s schedules prevent them from eating with other people, because the entire purpose of the meal shifts. This seems a somewhat sad thing, as food becomes a conductor for developing relationships, it’s an excellent bonding tool, useful in improving the quality of discourse between people. Eating alone seems to be surprisingly prevalent in our current society. ![]() This study is very relevant to my blog because it examines at length different individuals’ eating habits. “Commensality is eating with other people, and commensal eating patterns reflect the social relationships of individuals.”
