But owning properties can be as much of an occupation as it is an investment. Real estate has proven to be one of the best investments of all time, with returns comparable to the S&P 500 over the long term. Clean energy may turn out to one of the big plays for the entire decade. For the 12 months ending November 30, 2019, the fund had a return of 25.41%. A fund specializing in that subsector is iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN). That might make now an excellent time to get on board with clean energy. Though the fund returned less than 10% in 2019, it could be an excellent way to play energy volatility.Īlso in the energy sector, it’s undeniable that climate change is fast becoming a hot political issue. One way to play energy is through the Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE). Any significant disruption in oil flowing from that region can cause energy to spike across-the-board. Not only has the sector underperformed the general market for the past several years, but the geopolitical situation in the oil-rich Middle East seems to be heating up, particularly between the US and Iran. If you have an appetite for risk, the energy sector may be worth a good look. We suspect, given the current muted world economy, that S&P 500 earnings growth is likely to disappoint next year, whereas Health Care earnings should be steady.” “The total S&P 500’s 2020 earnings growth estimate is +9% and it trades at a 17x price-earnings multiple. “Although the S&P 500 Health Care sector has estimated 2020 earnings growth of +12%, it trades at a discount to its growth rate at a 17x price-earnings multiple,” notes Forbes contributor, Randy Watts. It may represent an opportunity to continue generating double-digit returns even in a less cooperative market. Though the healthcare field in general trailed the S&P 500 in 2019, the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) turned in a one-year return of close to 30%. Healthcare tends to be a durable sector, even when the general market is misbehaving.

Michael poured the pasta sauce into a bowl and placed that on the stove as well, while Tobechi unwrapped the dinner rolls. The bright red pot was the culmination of our efforts, sitting innocuously on the stove as the water began to simmer. Only my friend Courtney was able to come, so when our third group member Tobechi arrived, the five of us decided to eat together.Ĭooking the meal itself became part of the experience, as we all crowded into that warm, cavernous room. Michael and I went to the kitchen at the back of the house, which was well-lit and spacious. Not exactly an ideal setting for first impressions, but I was optimistic. Bass also thudded through the house periodically. That would explain why the three front rooms had been entirely cleared of furniture, apart from a table and some chairs. “We’re setting up for a party on Friday.” one of them said to me in passing. There were nine or ten guys running around spasmodically, and I wasn’t entirely certain what was going on. When I walked into the foyer I was a little surprised. Michael had previously volunteered his house as the place that would host this meal, so I had my friend drive me over there and we began. I ran to the grocery store and bought angel hair pasta, prego pasta sauce (with garlic and onion), extra virgin olive oil, basil and Parmesan Romano powdered cheese. Grace food people together company alone eating Commensality is a healthy, natural occurrence in social interactions. Eating among strangers has the potential discomfort of eating alone, but the unfamiliar people could go through metamorphosis together, ensuring a budding friendship, even delighting in this mutual experience. It’s almost meeting in the middle between eating with people you know and eating alone. I would like to reflect on how this could be applied to our project eating with strangers. The meal becomes rushed, satisfying the customers’ hunger and not doing anything to facilitate a lively discussion among friends, for example. Eating alone in public has almost become a pitiful activity, sadness for the neglected customer dining in the corner, hunched over their food protectively. But when eating alone, I think people feel uncomfortable. The food prompts conversation, and most of the time aids in creating a sense of ease. When eating among others, meals become leisurely. I find it unfortunate that people’s schedules prevent them from eating with other people, because the entire purpose of the meal shifts. This seems a somewhat sad thing, as food becomes a conductor for developing relationships, it’s an excellent bonding tool, useful in improving the quality of discourse between people. Eating alone seems to be surprisingly prevalent in our current society. This study is very relevant to my blog because it examines at length different individuals’ eating habits. “Commensality is eating with other people, and commensal eating patterns reflect the social relationships of individuals.” In Kerbal Space Program, players take control of the development of the Kerbals’ space exploration program. “ Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition on the latest generation of consoles marks yet another great milestone for the game, introducing new players to the franchise, as well as providing existing console players with an upgraded experience for free.” “Today marks the celebration of the 10 th anniversary of the original release of Kerbal Space Program, and over the last decade the team has continued to iterate and grow this incredible space sim into what it is today,” said Grant Gertz, Franchise Producer at Private Division. Although a museum ship, Alex and his crew are able to reactivate Missouri with the aid of the retired old veterans preserving her. Alex had planned to destroy the array with his ship, but after John Paul Jones is destroyed, the survivors are forced to return to base and acquire the only available naval vessel, the battleship USS Missouri. Believing that a much larger invasion might be imminent, Samantha contacts Alex with the radio which the NASA scientist was able to recover earlier and warns him. Samantha and Mick narrowly avoid detection and run into a fleeing NASA scientist. Both John Paul Jones and the alien ship are destroyed in the ensuing battle.īecause the ship that crashed in Hong Kong was their communications ship, the aliens land soldiers on Oahu and take over the area around the array they aim to use it to signal their home planet. Alex uses his ship to lure the alien vessel close to shore, where he and Nagata shoot out its bridge windows at sunrise, then proceed to fire at the alien vessel full force. An alien soldier is recovered from the water from the brief contact with the alien, the humans determine that the aliens are very sensitive to sunlight. During a night-time battle, the aliens and the Americans exchange pot shots, with John Paul Jones sinking two, but unable to lock onto the third. Although the barrier is preventing the use of radar and sonar, Nagata reveals that they could use the tsunami warning buoys around Hawaii to track the alien vessels' movements by their displacement. Although initially wanting to attack the alien ships in retaliation for his brother's and his crew's death, Alex is convinced to break off and recover survivors from Myōkō, with Captain Nagata among them this act prompts the aliens to interpret the surviving destroyer as not a threat. Being the most senior officer left in the ship, Alex is forced to take command. Initially attached to Sampson, Alex, who was one of the few out to take a closer look at the alien vessels, now boards John Paul Jones. The three destroyers attempt to establish contact, but the aliens open fire: Sampson and Myōkō are destroyed, with the entire crew of Sampson annihilated, including Stone, and John Paul Jones is damaged with the commanding and executive officers killed. Sampson, John Paul Jones, and Myōkō are sent to investigate, but are trapped when one of the ships erects an impenetrable force field around the Hawaiian islands. One ship collides with an orbital satellite and crashes in Hong Kong, while four others land in the waters near Hawaii. A small fleet of five alien ships arrives in response to the NASA signal. I own both, so the barrier to entry is low. I continue to look over the parapets to see how the other is performing. I’m currently in the Agenda camp, but only just. They are both great, and both infuriating. If you want features beyond that, you pay once again. Agenda has a fair freemium/pseudo-subscription model whereby you keep forever the features the app has at that moment, plus anything added in the coming 12 months. NotePlan is available via Setapp or as a standalone purchase. This does a better job of enabling the review of notes, but the friction associated with getting data in is the roadblock.īoth apps offer feature parity across macOS, iOS and iPadOS. Things were getting lost, rendering the whole use of the app almost pointless. I used NotePlan consistently for about 6 months, but realised that I wasn’t getting any benefit from the history of notes I had taken. It supports tagging which is how project notes can be tied together with the support of a search filter. NotePlan creates a .md text file for each day that a note is created and stores it in the file system. In essence, behind the scenes this is what is happening. It feels like I’m writing in a straight-forward text field that supports markdown. The only problem is that because the note-taking itself is so obtuse, many of my notes say something like “refer to notes taken in OmniOutliner”. Yet it has the killer feature of being able to link together meetings in a continuous timeline.Īdditionally, it allows me to attach files, take photos and create a rich tapestry of notes in relation to a project. In use, I often feel as thought I’m fighting against Agenda’s design. Everything that is put into the app is tied up into its proprietary datastore. It feels slow in operation, fiddly with a range of sliding panes, non-standard drop-down menus and a hybrid rich-text/markdown environment. Design Decisionsīoth apps have been carefully designed but have ended up operating quite differently to one another. They provide a method by which to take notes with regard to meetings, projects and daily happenings. Agenda and NotePlan: two apps that ostensibly do the same thing. I’ve tested it in Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer 6 and it works in all those, so I’m just going to cross my fingers and post this. That’s fine, I hope that happens because I’m up to the task of making sure it’s up to par and the best it can be. I’m fairly nervous calling it “Perfect”, because I’m sure some geniuses out there are going to poke some holes in it and call me out on a few things. I set to work and wouldn’t ya know it, I think I got it =) Page content is centered for users with even higher resolutions.Sidebars are of “equal height” to the main content.Nobody wants to read a line of text 1980px long. You could easily make this layout grow larger, but be mindful of how line-length affects readability. This accommodates 90%+ of all internet users. This accomodates users with 1280×768 resolution and everything in between. This accomodates users with 800×600 resolution, with no horizontal scroll! Here is what I think would be the “Perfect” fluid width layout: I think the best possible scenario is to make a fluid width site that accomodates everyone. Anything wider than 1024px is too much for static width sites, in my opinion. Or, you can optimize for 1024px and just make your 800px visitors horizontal scroll. You can optimize for 800px width, the lowest common denominator, and give up the use of several hundred pixels of width for users with larger screens. The alternative, static width websites, have to make a choice. I’ve been thinking a lot about screen resolution lately and how the use of fluid width websites is the best way to accommodate all visitors screen resolutions. |
